The city of Sucre, capital
of Bolivia, lies on a quiet valley of mild climate. It has
been named the White City too because the color of its colonial
buildings usually adorned by lovely balconies and fonts.
You can visit churchs, museums and historic buildings. Catedral,
Casa de la Libertad, Museos Universitarios Charcas, Museo
& Convento Santa Clara, Museo & Convento La Recoleta,
Convento San Felipe Neri, La Glorieta. The Museo Textil
ASUR exhibits the beautiful Tarabuco and Jalq'a textiles,
which are made since former times by the natives near Sucre.
You will see dinosaur tracks in Cal Ork'o.
Fiestas
Virgen de Guadalupe (September
8), procession and local dances; Pujllay (February or March),
customs and folk dances in Tarabuco.
Surroundings
Every
Sunday in Tarabuco, 1 1/2 hrs from Sucre by bus, there's
an interesting native fair, where you'll see campesinos
with their traditional dresses, besides the lovely textiles
made around.
On the spurs of Cordillera
de los Frailes, west of Sucre, there are several interesting
places and routes. In Chataquila, at 1 - 1 1/2 hrs from
Sucre by truck, you can start a brief walk to Patatoloyo,
named also Incamachay, or the Sistine Chapel of the rock
paintings.
From Chataquila, you can also
follow a larger route (1 day or more) going through the
pre-Hispanic trail to Chaunaca, and from here continue to
the crater of Maragua , one of the most impressive spots
with incredible colors and formations.
There are two options to get
Talula: walking from Maragua or by car from Sucre via Quila
Quila (2 hrs). There are pools of hot springs, rock paintings,
besides dinosaurs tracks in the next village of Humaca.
Another town well visited too
is Yotala, which is at 15 Km on the road to Potosí
keeping yet its beautiful colonial architecture.

Potosi is the highest city
on the world. It lies at the foot of the Cerro Rico, this
hill was famous on the world once, due to the incredible
richness of its silver mines. You can visit notable museums
and walk amid narrow streets with beautiful churchs and
relies from colonial times. Casa Real de la Moneda, Catedral,
Torre de la Compañía de Jesús. Iglesia
de San Lorenzo, Convento & Museo San Francisco, Convento
& Museo Santa Teresa, Ingenio & Museo San Marcos,
Calle Quijarro, etc.
Fiestas
Espíritu (at the end
of June and beginning of August), offerings to the Earth
Mother. Ch'utillos or San Bartolomé (at the end of
August), folk dances.
Surroundings
In
the Cerro Rico (Minas Cooperativas) you can see galleries,
customs and the job of miners hand working to get the last
ore remains from this fabulous hill. On the southeast of
the city, you will find the Lagunas de Kari Kari, artificial
lagoons built in the colonial period to provide hydraulic
power for the mining factories.
The Laguna Tarapaya is a curious
circular lagoon with hot water on a beautiful volcanic scenery,
at about 23 Km from Potosí.
About 46 km away on the road
to Sucre, you'll find the village of Betanzos. There are
ancient rock paintings around and an interesting native
fair on Sundays.
